What should I look for when hiring a contractor?
The booming construction industry of the 1990's gave rise to many general contractors in Oregon. Choosing a contractor to meet your needs means taking some time to do a little research about the company, and making sure that you consider the following:
• Was the service level and responsiveness during your first meeting what you would expect of any high quality professional services organization?
• Was the contractor able to answer all your questions and respond to your concerns in a manner that left you feeling comfortable about his/her level of knowledge?
• Did you receive a written estimate in a timely manner and presented in a professional manner?
• Were you able to acquire a list of references and suppliers from the contractor that you could personally follow up?
• Is the contractor registered with the Oregon Contractors Board? The State of Oregon requires that in order to conduct any type of construction work in Oregon, contractors must be registered with the CCB. You can visit the CCB web site and check background information on all contractors registered in the state: www.ccb.state.or.us/. Simply ask the contractor for their CCB number.
